Tornado ratings begin with what the wind damaged, because a tornado’s peak wind is almost never measured directly. EF Scale makes the Enhanced Fujita Scale easier to work through when you are learning, reviewing a case, or documenting damage in the field.
Choose the damage indicator that matches the structure or vegetation, compare the observed condition with degrees of damage and reference photos, then review the expected wind range and EF rating. The adjustable estimator helps account for construction quality within the published bounds, and the full reference remains available offline.
EF Scale is a reference and learning tool. A real damage survey requires training, field evidence, and expert judgment; official assessments are performed by the National Weather Service and its delegates.
